These Easy Cuban Black Beans are proof that a simple can of black beans can turn into something seriously delicious with just a few extra ingredients. Simmered with onion, garlic, cumin, oregano, and warm spices, they’re savory, hearty, and packed with flavor—and they come together in about 20 minutes.

I originally started making these black beans as part of my Cuban Chicken Black Bean Rice Bowls, but they’ve quickly become a side dish worth making all on their own. I especially love serving them over my Cilantro Lime Rice with a spoonful of Fresh Mango Salsa on the side. The combination of savory beans, bright citrus, and sweet mango is so good!

Using canned black beans also keeps this recipe incredibly easy. There’s no soaking beans overnight or simmering a pot for hours. With a few pantry staples and some fresh aromatics, you can transform canned beans into a flavorful side dish that’s perfect for weeknight dinners, meal prep, tacos, rice bowls, and more.

Why You’ll Love These Cuban Black Beans

There are plenty of reasons these beans have become one of my favorite easy sides:

  • Quick and easy: They’re ready in about 20 minutes.
  • Made with pantry staples: Canned black beans make this recipe especially convenient.
  • Packed with flavor: Garlic, onion, cumin, and oregano give simple black beans so much more depth.
  • Great for meal prep: Make a batch at the beginning of the week and add them to bowls, tacos, and lunches.
  • Versatile: Serve them as a side dish or use them as a component in a larger meal.
  • Budget-friendly: You don’t need a long list of expensive ingredients to make something delicious.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Black Beans

Canned black beans are my shortcut for keeping this recipe quick and easy. They already have a creamy texture and only need a short simmer to absorb all of the seasonings.

Onion

Diced onion creates the flavorful base for the beans. Give it a few minutes to soften before adding the remaining ingredients.

Garlic

Fresh garlic adds so much flavor here. I definitely recommend using freshly minced garlic rather than garlic powder if you have it.

Cumin

Ground cumin adds warmth and earthiness to the beans without making them spicy.

Oregano

A little dried oregano adds another savory layer of flavor and works beautifully with the cumin and garlic.

Smoked Paprika

Smoked paprika adds subtle smokiness and gives these quick black beans a little more depth.

Broth

A splash of chicken or vegetable broth gives the beans enough liquid to simmer and helps all of those seasonings come together.

Lime

I love finishing the beans with a squeeze of fresh lime juice. That little bit of acidity wakes everything up and keeps the beans from tasting too heavy.

Salt and Pepper

Season to taste at the end, especially since canned beans and broth can already contain quite a bit of sodium.

How to Make Easy Cuban Black Beans

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

Heat a little olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 4–5 minutes, or until it begins to soften.

Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds to 1 minute, just until fragrant.

Step 2: Add the Seasonings

Stir in the cumin, oregano, and smoked paprika. Let the spices cook with the onion and garlic for about 30 seconds.

Taking this extra moment to toast the spices helps bring out their flavor before adding the liquid.

Step 3: Add the Black Beans

Add the black beans and broth to the pan and stir everything together.

Bring the beans to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat and allow them to cook for about 10–15 minutes.

Step 4: Make Them Creamy

For a slightly thicker, creamier consistency, use the back of a spoon to mash a small portion of the beans against the side of the pan.

You don’t want to mash all of them—just enough to thicken the liquid while leaving plenty of whole beans for texture.

Step 5: Finish and Serve

Finish with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and taste for seasoning. Add salt and black pepper as needed, then serve warm.

Tips for the Best Black Beans

Don’t Rush the Onion

Let the onion soften before adding the garlic and spices. Those few extra minutes help build the base flavor of the entire dish.

Toast Your Spices

Once you add the cumin, oregano, and smoked paprika, give them about 30 seconds in the pan before adding your liquid. This helps bring out their flavor.

Don’t Drain Away All That Flavor

Depending on how you prepare your beans, you can use a little of the liquid from the can to help create a creamy consistency. There’s no need to rinse away every drop.

Mash Some, Not All

Mashing a few of the beans is one of my favorite tricks for creating a thicker sauce without adding flour, cornstarch, or cream.

Finish With Fresh Lime

Don’t underestimate that final squeeze of lime! It adds just enough brightness to balance the savory beans.

What to Serve With Cuban Black Beans

These beans can easily be served as a simple side dish, but they’re also perfect for building a complete meal.

One of my favorite ways to serve them is in my Cuban Chicken Black Bean Rice Bowls alongside juicy citrus-marinated chicken, Cilantro Lime Rice, and Fresh Mango Salsa.

You can also serve them with:

  • Grilled chicken
  • Jerk chicken
  • Mojo pork
  • Steak
  • Shrimp
  • Tacos
  • Burritos
  • Rice bowls
  • Fried sweet plantains
  • Avocado
  • Grilled vegetables

For an easy meatless meal, spoon the beans over cilantro lime rice and add mango salsa, avocado, and your favorite toppings.

Variations

Add Bell Pepper

Sauté finely diced green bell pepper with the onion for another layer of flavor and texture.

Make Them Spicy

These beans aren’t meant to be particularly spicy, but you can add diced jalapeño, cayenne pepper, or your favorite hot sauce if you want some heat.

Keep Them Vegetarian

Use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.

Make Them Extra Creamy

Mash a larger portion of the beans during the last few minutes of cooking for a thicker, creamier consistency.

How to Store Cuban Black Beans

Allow leftover beans to cool before transferring them to an airtight container. Store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

The beans may thicken as they sit, so add a small splash of water or broth when reheating if needed.

You can reheat them in a saucepan over medium-low heat or microwave individual portions until warmed through.

Can You Freeze Black Beans?

Yes! These black beans freeze really well.

Once completely cooled, transfer them to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Leave a little room at the top of the container because the liquid will expand as it freezes.

Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cuban black beans spicy?

Not necessarily. These beans get most of their flavor from garlic, onion, cumin, oregano, and smoked paprika rather than hot peppers. You can easily add some heat if that’s what you prefer.

Do I need to rinse canned black beans?

For this recipe, you don’t necessarily have to rinse away all of the bean liquid. A little of that starchy liquid can actually help give the finished beans a creamier consistency.

If you prefer to rinse your beans, that’s fine too. Just add a little extra broth while they’re simmering.

Can I make Cuban black beans ahead of time?

Absolutely. They’re a great make-ahead side dish and may taste even better the next day after the flavors have had more time to come together.

Can I use dried black beans instead?

Yes. You’ll need to soak and cook the dried beans until tender first, then use the cooked beans in the recipe.

What rice goes best with Cuban black beans?

White rice is always a great choice, but I especially love these beans with my Cilantro Lime Rice. The fresh lime and cilantro add brightness that pairs perfectly with the savory beans.

Final Thoughts

These Easy Cuban Black Beans are exactly the kind of recipe I love having in my back pocket—simple ingredients, minimal prep, and so much flavor. They’re easy enough to throw together on a busy weeknight but versatile enough to serve with everything from grilled meats and tacos to a simple bowl of rice.

And if you’re making my Cuban Chicken Black Bean Rice Bowls, don’t skip them! Pair these beans with my Cilantro Lime Rice and Fresh Mango Salsa and you’ve got all the components for one seriously flavorful bowl.
