5 Spiced Chicken Wings

Happy Labor Day! I can’t believe the summer is already coming to an end! Where does the time go? Labor Day is one of my favorite holidays because it means that I get to bust out the grill, and one of my favorite things to throw on the grill are chicken wings.

As you know, I have been trying to come up with different ways to cook chicken. Last month, I shared my Balsamic Glazed Chicken Breasts, and today I have a dynamite recipe for the grill, my 5 Spiced Chicken Wings.

These wings are packed with flavor! The 5 spices used in this recipe are chili powder, ground red pepper, garlic powder, cumin, and brown sugar. That’s it! Each of the spices are great on their own, but combined together they give the chicken a nice smoky depth of flavor. I also added a little onion and jalapeno for some extra heat.

If you don’t have a grill, these wings are great in the deep fryer (like most wings are traditionally made) or in the oven. I chose the grill because it’s summer, and I’m starting to hate frying in my apartment…seems like the fry smell never wants to leave.

how-to-make-wingsServe these with a cool dipping sauce or eat them on their own! I also love serving these wings with my Caribbean Rice and Peas dish.  Enjoy!

These spicy and flavorful 5 Spiced Chicken Wings aren't like your typical Asian wings. Seasoned with just chili powder, cumin, brown sugar, garlic powder, and red pepper they are smoky and packed with flavor!

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Chicken wings (about 10)
  • 1 tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsbp Cumin
  • 1 tbsp Ground Red Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 jalapeno, diced
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the chicken wings with a paper towel.
  2. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. In a large resealable bag; combine the chicken wings, chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, ground red pepper, brown sugar, jalapeno, and onion. Seal the bag, toss until all the chicken is coated, and let marinade in the fridge over night or at least for two hours before cooking.
  4. Prepare grill for medium heat. Once grill is heated, remove the wings from the bag and grill covered for 20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized. Make sure to turn the wings occasionally for an even cook and to avoid burning the chicken.

  8. These look SO good! We don’t have access to a grill; could these be baked by any chance?

    1. evseats Author says:

Thanks so much Chelsie! Yes these can be baked. I usually bake them around 375 for 20 minutes and then put them under the broiler for an additional 5 minutes just to crisp up the skin! 🙂
