WATCH THE BEST TIME IN ICELAND- DAY 1 TRAVEL VLOG

It’s been a while since you all have heard from me, but it’s Friday and I’m so happy to be back with this  amazing post! I’ve been visiting the country of Iceland this past month, and it was nothing short of AMAZING! Iceland is such a beautiful country, and I was in awe of it the entire time I was there. I got to spend some time in Reykjavik (the capital) before traveling down the coast of south Iceland sightseeing. I highly recommend visiting if the opportunity ever presents itself. It was a life changing experience for me, and it has me itching to see more of the world!

Today’s post is gong to cover my first day in Iceland where I spent the majority of my time in Reykjavik. Total flight time from Los Angeles was about 12 hours. I did have a layover in Seattle (no direct flight). Thank you to Icelandair for covering my trip expenses! The flight there was really smooth, and one of the best airlines I’ve ever been on. They have really nice food!

DAY 1 IN REYKJAVIK

WHERE TO STAY.

I stayed at the Fosshotel Reykjavik, the largest hotel in Iceland, right in the heart of the business district. It was super close to all the attractions and destination sights like Hallgrímskirkja (the iconic Iceland church), and the main shopping area. My room was small, but super cozy and comfortable. They also offer daily breakfast at their Haust restaurant located inside the hotel. They have a Beer Garden where they specialize in pairing your meal with the perfect beer for it.

The views from the hotel are breathtaking, and I really enjoyed my stay here. There’s a bus stop conveniently located right next to the hotel; which was the stop where my bus met me to take me to the Blue Lagoon. There’s also a really nice deli right across the street called Johansen’s Deli (make sure to try their asparagus soup… delicious!).

VISITING THE BLUE LAGOON.

A trip to Iceland is not complete without visiting the Iconic Blue Lagoon. This was such a sweet experience. While there are many geothermal springs in Iceland this one happens to be man made and one of Iceland’s top destination spot. I booked my ticket online, the website recommended this and tickets at the door are hard to get. I was also able to book transportation there and back right on the website as well. My bus stop was right outside of the hotel, and getting there couldn’t have been any easier.

I booked the premium package which included:

  • Entrance to Blue Lagoon
  • Silica Mud Mask
  • Use of Bathrobe
  • Use of Towel
  • Slippers
  • 1st drink of your choice
  • Algae Mask
  • Table reservation at LAVA Restaurant
  • Sparkling wine at LAVA Restaurant

It was very cold and windy, but as soon as I got in the water I warmed right up. I suggest getting in the water and staying in. Going in and out just makes the whole experience less ideal. There are bars in the water where you can get the silica mud mask and algae mask (if you purchased the premium). There is also a drink station with alcoholic beverages (wine and beer) as well as non alcoholic drinks.

I spent total of an hour in the pool which was fine since I was by myself and it was a pretty cold day. Most people spend about 2 hours, and there’s also a restaurant where you can dine before or after. This was the best time in Iceland for me, and it’s an experience I definitely recommend.

WHERE TO EAT.

Matur Og Drykkur

I had dinner at Matur Og Drykur, named after Iceland’s first cookbook; translation food and drink. They specialize in classical Icelandic cuisine with a modern twist. They find Icelandic cookbooks and written recipes and use them in new and inventive ways.

Dinner was super fresh and tasted homemade. I also really enjoyed Skyr, a cheese popular in Iceland that was made as a dessert.

Halibut soup with mussels, apples and raisins.

Lamb, roasted celeriac, potatoes, pickled red currants and grated lamb heart

Skyr with bluberry granita, blueberries and oats.
