These hot sausage and pepper sandwiches are a party in your mouth! Spicy Italian sausages cooked in a delicious tomato sauce with bell peppers on a delicious hoagie roll!
The first time I ever had these delicious sandwiches was in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and it was like an explosion of flavor in my mouth! I didn’t eat much Italian food growing up, but these sausages instantly transported me back to a place of warmth and comfort. It felt like I was eating something special and homemade, and it was something I knew that I need to try my hand at making.
I make these hot sausage and peppers sandwiches the way my boyfriend’s family makes them. They like them hot and use spicy Italian sausages as well as adding spice to the tomato sauce. I also like to add in a good amount of sliced chili peppers along with the bell peppers because I really like the flavor it gives the sauce, and of course the heat. The great thing about this recipe is that it’s pretty versatile. If you don’t want to use sausages, you can replace them with turkey sausages. For an even faster version of this recipe, you can use store-bought marina sauce instead of making the tomato sauce from scratch. Cheese is optional, but for me is a must! I love to add provolone cheese slices on top of each sausage and putting it in the broiler to melt and turn golden a little.
I don’t know what it is about these hot sausage and peppers sandwiches that make them so special. Maybe its the snap of the sausage mixed with a rich tomato sauce that just soaks into the bread. All those flavors and textures happening at the same time makes these sandwiches almost irresistible! Check out the recipe below.
